Never Fear, the Poetry Friday Round Up Is Here!!!

Today is my LUCKY day! This is my first time hosting Poetry Friday. Yay!
(Not sure what Poetry Friday is? Renée at No Water River gives a great explanation here.)

I am at once excited (welcome to my blog, I dusted the joint just for you),
nervous (what if my blog smells or worse, my poetry stinks?),
and down right terrified (what if the link-thingy doesn't work?).

Now that you are here, I will put my fears aside and do my best to be a fearless hostess.

But first a poem about...fear.

 FEAR (the other 4-letter F-word)

spilled salt
open umbrella
black cat passing
unlucky fella

broken mirror
under a ladder
Friday the 13th
nothing sadder

except for fear
ruling your life
superstitions
only cause strife

Fun fact: paraskevidekatriaphobia means fear of Friday the 13th. Who knew?

Never fear, the round up HERE:

  1. Bridget! It IS scary to host--and takes TIME...so thank you, thank you for hosting, brave woman. I recently heard Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love) say that for her, the opposite of fear is curiosity. I LOVE that!

What are you thankful for? TeachingAuthors' latest writing prompt is to write a Thanku—a haiku expressing gratitude. Want to try? And after surviving the horrible tsunami of the flu this past week, you can probably guess what I'm thankful for...
My post goes live on Friday morning:

  3. Bridget, I've only hosted PF once. I'd like to do it again, but teaching full time (and the scary factor) keep me from making the commitment. : ) You are a wonderful host! I love your poem and want to share it with my students. I know they'll love it too!

    1. Thank you, Linda! Yes, the scary factor kept me away from the commitment, but now I know what I'm doing...sort of. Hope your kids enjoy my poem. =)

  4. Congratulations on your first PF roundup hosting! So glad you're not superstitious--Nov. 13 is your lucky number! (Always amused me when a hotel skipped using the number 13 when numbering floors....) ..I'm counting myself lucky, too, being able to join in with such a prestigious group of poets..I'm putting fear aside as you counsel in your poem--putting my first poem for 2 voices out in public for all to see, dismiss, or ridicule. I love the title of your poem! Yes! "Fear" is an obscene word when we allow it to stifle, muzzle, or limit...Onward, thru the fear...God bless you. Again, congratulations! And thanks so much for hosting--and accommodating early bird link-ups! (Oh. and you didn't have to clean up on my account, but I appreciate all your efforts to put out a gracious welcome mat.Thank you! Hope you are no longer even a wee bit fearful. Your first PF hosting will be just great; Fri. 13th or not, I bet you can count on!)

  7. Bridget, I am cracking up. I misread a word in line 3 of your poem. Let's just say that the unlucky fellow must be *really* sorry that he met up with the black cat.

Caroline Starr Rose, who writes historical novels in verse, is guest posting at Author Amok this week. During Thanksgiving, history learning often focuses on the Plymouth Settlement. But Caroline's latest book, Blue Birds, is set at an earlier English settlement on Roanoke Island.

  8. Thanks for hosting, Bridget! PF does take some commitment - but have no fear, we're all friends here! Your poem is a good way to show kids we all have similar fears...so they won't feel alone. My "Poetry...Cubed!" contest is underway for the month of Nov., and I already have 3 entries, which I share today.

Feeling funny sharing about a poetry path in Ohio with so many American PF friends... from over here in Australia. But if you haven't read about it, I'm sure you'll want to. I think it's a beautiful idea.

  23. Congratulations on your first Roundup, Bridget! Thank you for having us all at your lovely blogging home. I find superstitions fascinating... particularly as they so often coexist with faith & religion. We humans are constantly trying to make sense of our world, aren't we? Thanks for your poem, and happy day to you.

    1. Thank you, Irene for your support and for joining in the Poetry Friday fun. Yes, we humans are always trying figure things out...with not much success at times. Hadn't thought about superstition intersecting with faith and religion, but you are right. Interesting. =)

  25. What fun to think about these superstitions today - I too had forgotten, and the way you bring your poem around at the end is so so right. Funny how even though I would not consider myself that superstitious, I do avoid some of the things you mention. However, we all adore our black kitty Fiona who makes us feel lucky! Thank you for hosting this rowdy crowd so graciously at your warm place. I hope your whole day is lucky. xo
