Seasonal Disorientation

I was dumbfounded
when I went shopping today.
I went looking for costumes
but found Christmas displays.

I combed the aisles
for ghosts and ghouls,
instead all I found
were Christmas jewels.

I searched for pumpkins,
but found lighted trees,
festive ornaments
instead of bulk candy.

What month is it -
October, right?
Then why is Santa
giving me a fright?

Stores seem confused
by the calendar dates.
If you're buying for Halloween,
it's already too late.

    Yup, you've got it right! Christmas is upon us, and Thanksgiving has a wee part on the aisles. That second verse is terrific! Happy Halloween, Bridget!

    Great title! And I particularly like the last two lines.
    You're right, of course, but the funny thing is that even with all this early notification, Christmas still seems to be here before I know it! How is that possible? Must be special relativity at work.

    So true, Bridget. When I lived in Australia, it always disturbed me that Christmas decorations came out in October, but I figured it was because they don't celebrate Halloween or Thanksgiving. Miranda still hasn't gotten her Halloween costume, and I'm afraid she'll have no choice but to go as a Christmas tree!

      Thanks, Michelle! I think it would be unnerving to celebrate Christmas in summer, too, as they do in Australia. My sister lives in Perth and she BBQ's her Christmas dinner sometimes. And BTW, if Miranda went as a Christmas tree it would be hilarious! =)

      Poor kids! When a week is a lifetime to them, we grownups in search of "extended play" - or make that "extended pay" make it an eternity, getting their engines going for something light years away to them.

    Ha--your seasonal disorientation made me laugh. One has to wonder, though...certainly there are plenty of us last-minute procrastinators about.

      Thanks, Buffy! Yes, there is always something for the last minute shoppers, but I think the selection is limited. I like Michelle's idea to just go as a Christmas tree. =)

    I did have to snort at Michelle's idea to dress as a Christmas tree for Halloween...but at the same time, the marketing that starts so early just makes me fume! I want to shake them (whoever "them" is) and say, "It's not working for me!! You are turning me OFF instead of making me buy more!"
