Backyard lizards
tease my dog -
zipping under the bougainvillaea,
whipping up the bark of the Mesquite tree,
flitting over the brick wall.
My dog charges,
leaps,
bounds,
and barks.
Chasing those
lizards
in the desert
heat.
Hi Bridget! My dog chases lizards (anoles) in the Florida heat! It is an endless game, isn't it? Nicely captured!
ReplyDeleteThanks, BJ! Our dog has boundless energy for lizards...and she catches a few once in a while. Not pretty... = )
DeleteGreat poem, Bridget! It reminds me of a story a friend once told me about when she was outside with her young boys. She was distracted by the phone, but when she turned back the tail of a lizard was hanging out of her son's mouth.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Michelle! O. M. G. about your friend's son. Our dog has had a lizard tail or two hanging out of her mouth on occasion, but neither of my daughters - thank goodness! Thanks for making my family laugh! = )
DeleteMichelle: please recommend my book MINN AND JAKE to your friend whose son likes lizards!
DeleteWill do, Janet. I just put a copy on reserve at the library!
DeleteGreat imagery! I can just imagine how funny this must be to watch! : )
ReplyDeleteThanks, Linda! It is fun to watch the dog do this...she never seems to tire from the game. = )
DeleteWhat speedy lizards! Our rabbit likes to lead our puppy on a merry chase. He even waits for her to catch up -- sounds like the lizards won't do that :-)
ReplyDeleteOMG to Michelle's comment!
Thanks, Tabatha! The desert rabbits don't usually come into our yard, but our dog goes after them when we take her for a walk on the trails. She always seems to forget she's on a leash until it's too late though. And yes, I agree, OMG to Michelle's comment. Too funny! = )
DeleteNice poem, Bridget! I can picture it...
ReplyDeleteThanks, Monica! We have a daily chase shows. = )
DeleteI love your desert poems. They transport me to a place different from my home. Here my cat sits in the window and salivates over squirrels and birds.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Liz! I sometimes miss the lush green of places where it rains and snows...but not the humidity or mosquitoes. ;o)
DeleteI wonder if they keep score in this game? I like the details of the plants -- I miss the mesquite trees back home!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Keri! If they did keep score the lizards would generally win, until our dog gets one in her mouth - then it is game over for the lizard. = )
DeleteThis poem is packed with child-appeal. And I like your details (bougainvillea, mesquite)--we have a great view of your backyard in this poem, Bridget!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Janet! A desert backyard has its own unique charms. = )
DeleteAfter so many poems about dogs chasing cats or rabbits, this is a nice change of location and species!
ReplyDeleteThanks, MaryLee! The desert offers a change of pace with all its critters and challenges. = )
